Hello all, first of all we would like to thank all of our listener’s and guests for your support during the first 30 episodes of TWILT. A special thanks to Kevin Van Lierop for redesigning the web site and Bill Deys for helping get our initial shows and hosting off the ground. Also thanks to Derek at Orpheum for sponsoring us with hosting space and letting us have fun with the in show advertising.

Both Sean and I are victims of our own enthusiasm with many other projects on the go. In particular you just have to look at Sean’s calendar to see how busy he is of late. Because of this in the last 2 months we’ve have not kept TWILT as a priority as much as we would like to. To ensure we can keep a quality podcast (and to keep us a bit more sane) we have decided for the next little while to move to a bi-weekly schedule for TWILT. The next show will be Monday May 14th at 7pm edt.

Thanks for your support.

Our guest this week is Jason Clarke and at http://jasonclarke.ca/

Going back all the way to public school, I was a natural leader. In grade 8 I was asked to be Stage Manager for a local theatre group, and continued to work with them for 5 more years during many different productions. My love for stage management grew in high school, as I managed four different productions. My largest achievement was our production of Music Man in 2002. This was the first musical theatre production to be held at our school in 40 years and it was a tremendous success.

My passion for theatre led me into film. Working with a friend from high school, we started working on film and video projects and Sunny Day Jazz Productions was born. As we started to insert ourselves in the London film community, I realized that it needed a stronger voice and more opportunities for growth. I then founded and still chair the London Short Film Showcase which is an organization that is striving to make video and film a major content creator here in London. I have now come full circle with my newest job at Stratford Festival as a Web and Social Media Content Creator or more simply put, a videographer. I am thrilled to finally be able to combine my passion for film and my deep respect for the theatre into one exciting and ever changing career.

To translate, our Social and Community Support Services budget will save 8.9% due to changes to Ontario Works, but we are actually projecting to cut 12.4%, which equates to a true reduction of $1,100,000. With the budget of this division primarily going towards the delivery of social assistance, one wonders what a one million dollar cut will mean? And, like the cut to the affordable housing reserve fund (since reversed), will we go for 0% on the backs of the poorest in our community?

We had two guests this week.

Melissa Dawn Lierman and at https://www.facebook.com/LocalLondonLife She also has another Twitter account and site at timeoutmom.com

We talked about about the process that created UnLondon and that how social media can bring immediately access to customers for businesses.

We moved onto how 4.6 million in surplus came out of the operation budget and the deciscion on what to do with the money. In the end 1 millon was restore to the affordable house budget and the rest went into the economic development program.

Moving on to a rejection of a bylaw on behaviour in the city hall gallery. The prosposed bylaw would have limited many actions including signs and banners in the gallery. Councillor Orser was quoted in the story “ Coun. Steve Orser, who is acting mayor, was the only politician in favour of curtailing the public. He said he was concerned about projectiles such as tomatoes and apples if the public isn’t barred from bringing food to city hall.”

About the “Fourth Wall”

The “fourth wall” is a term used to describe the imaginary barrier separating an audience from a stage. When an actor speaks directly to the audience, or an audience member interacts with the cast, the fourth wall has been “broken”. City Hall also has a fourth wall. Most residents are simply spectators, passively absorbing local politics through headlines and sound bites. How can we break the fourth wall at City Hall and create a culture of local citizen engagement? How can we open the doors to meaningful dialogue and participation, allowing us to collectively build the city we want to live in?

We moved on to talking about how social media has been helping the arts. Although much progress has been made there still is much further to go in showing the majority of Londoner’s that there is a thriving arts community. While we will don’t have the resources to put on a multimillion doller production as one would find up the 401 there is many excellent events in London to partake in.

Dundas Street had an “Art Attack” today. And then we moved onto to talking about how My Sister’s Place is using different methods of engaging volunteers in helping meet it’s goals.

Although much progress has been made there still is much further to go in showing the majority of Londoner's that there is a thriving arts community. While we will don't have the resources to put on a multimillion doller production as one would find up the 401 there is many excellent events in London to partake in.

Dundas Street had an "Art Attack" today. And then we moved onto to talking about how My Sister's Place is using different methods of engaging volunteers in helping meet it's goals.

Chatroom log from this week’s show.

We are pleased to have two returning guests, Christine Moss and Glenn Pearson

We first started off with talking about the Gearing Up For Growth conference. In which Chris will be speaking at. She also touched on The Social Enterprise Exchange.

We then moved on to several postings on Glen’s blog. We first covered on why he won’t be running again. And then moved onto his most recent blog post on the NDP leadership campaign. We discussed what this means for the country.

We also talked about how do we get more citizens involved. We and many viewers of this show are in a local ‘bubble’ . Glen pointed out that citizens have had things easy for so long that they can’t make the connect. It won’t be until people realize that this will eafect them.

Moving on, we congratulated the London Lightning on winning the NBL championship.

We moved onto the current activitvy related to Fleming Drive. The city will be holding a public meeting on this issue.

Speaking of council we covered a report going to council that recommends a 3% pay increase for Council and the Mayor.

We touched on that there are reports of freezes for ODSP and Ontario Works coming out in the provincial budget later this week. We all agreed this is a bad idea by the Liberals.

We talked about one of Phil McLeod’s recent blog posts which some long term planning decisions were overturned on the fly by some on council. Just because a councillor won a seat, in some cases by a small amount, it’s not a mandate.

We then covered several new groups that have started up to try and increase citizen engagement. Citizen Corps and Better London. Glen also mentioned about the library could server a role with this as a community gathering place.

Ontario’s top court struck down a ban on brothels on the grounds it exposes sex-trade workers to added danger. The province is considering appealing to the Surpreme court of Canada.

Mayor Fontana is hosting a virtual town hall on Tuesday. Worth checking out if you have time.

We finished up by talking about a No Title – No Agenda mixer being put on by Emerging Leaders March 27th.

Chatroom log from this week’s show.

Our guest tonight is Chantelle Diachina and at http://www.neverwateraweed.blogspot.ca/ She works at rtraction as a client relationship manager as well as being a student and instructer of yoga. As well she enjoys public speaking, appearing at Ignite London twice already. In addition she has a B.Ed., M.E.d and over 10 years of classroom teaching experience. Chantelle draws from those experiences to continually strive to live the best life possible, while helping others to do the same.

We started off with Sean talking about why he a good husband by going down to Detroit Airport to pick up his wife, and then the wonderful long chat he had with the TSA about fishing at the border.

We then talked to Chantelle about her many experiences in her life including schooling in both US and Canada and how she tries to live life as well as possible. We talked about how racism can exist and how people can feel like they are not part of the community. We also attempted to define on what it means to be a Londoner.

We then moved on to the Ontario Ombudsman’s office releasing the report on the in-camera meeting of city council re: the occupy movement. We then touched upon the city have quite a bit of bad news lately, but we must look at some of the more positive things.

Then we moved on to the riot on Fleming Drive. We talked about what could be done with both the people that broke the law and what could be done to prevent this in future. One interesting idea would be the idea of restorative justice. Stuart was the one to rant this time with Sean playing devil’s advocate. A good conversation happened on this topic with several ideas put forward.

We finished up with asking Chantelle for a prescription for the community, she gave a very simple answer. “Slow Down”.

You can find us on Twitter at @twiltpodcast

We livestream at livestream.com/twilt during the show usually Mondays at 7pm edt. You can find old video archives of the show as well there.

We then moved on to the Ontario Ombudsman's office releasing the report on the in-camera meeting of city council re: the occupy movement.

Stuart was the one to rant this time with Sean playing devil's advocate. A good conversation happened on this topic with several ideas put forward.

We finished up with asking Chantelle for a prescription for the community, she gave a very simple answer. "Slow Down".

Sounds like a great idea.

Update: Regular listener @vortexvisual provided some addition links on restorative justice.

Welcome to This Week In London Tweets sponsored by Orpheum Hosting Solutions

You can find us on Twitter at @twiltpodcast

We livestream at livestream.com/twilt during the show usually Mondays at 7pm est.

We started by mocking the whole Oscar’s and the hype around it. The only good news is that Christopher Plumber took home an award.

Our guest this week is Jeff Preston who is a Doctoral Student, Disability Advocate and Motivational Speaker. If that’s not enough he also is behind the comic Cripz Which “takes a funny and inspirational look at two disabled high school students living in London, Ontario.”

We started talking about how long Jeff has been in London (almost 10 years!) and what he has been up to. Jeff spoke to inclusion over accessibly rights. “Its more important that everyone is part of the community” One notable point that Jeff does not just consider wheelchairs to be a disability, things like social anxiety disorder should be considered. We need to remove the stigma of disability.

We moved onto the final council budget meet that occured last week, and the frustration many in the community had over some of the decisions made by the Mayor and 7 other councillors in the name of 0%. Jeff gave us an excellent overview of the OADA act and how it’s ultamatly more costly for municpalites who fail to contribute to reserve funds for when the act moves to it’s compliance phase.

We talked about local website altlondon.ca reporting a lunch time meeting that “six (6) members of London city council met last Tues. Feb. 21, shortly before 12 noon at the Harmony Grand Buffet at 304 Talbot Street (at York) in London, immediately prior to a meeting of the Investment and Economic Prosperity Committee at 1 pm at city hall, a meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee at 1:15 pm and a key meeting of City Council at 3 pm, where the controversial 2012 budget was finalized later that evening.”

It is being reported that 2 complaints have gone to the Ontario’s Ombudsman about this meeting and whether any part of the Municipal Act was broken.

Moving on we talked about a new TV show on Rogers local TV called #ldnont, hosted by Lincoln McCardle We are big fans of Lincoln and the show and hope to get our act in year and guest on the show.

We then moved on to our final topic, namely #bacon and the fact that many London twitter users love bacon. Jeff has even created a drawing with the god of bacon lovers called a snacon (we need to get stickers made.)

We livestream at livestream.com/twilt during the show usually Mondays at 7pm est.

We started by mocking the whole Oscar's and the hype around it. The only good news is that Christopher Plumber took home an award.

Our guest this week is Jeff Preston who is a Doctoral Student, Disability Advocate and Motivational Speaker. If that's not enough he also is behind the comic Cripz Which "takes a funny and inspirational look at two disabled high school students living in London, Ontario."

We started talking about how long Jeff has been in London (almost 10 years!) and what he has been up to. Jeff spoke to inclusion over accessibly rights. "Its more important that everyone is part of the community" One notable point that Jeff does not just consider wheelchairs to be a disability, things like social anxiety disorder should be considered. We need to remove the stigma of disability.

We moved onto the final council budget meet that occured last week, and the frustration many in the community had over some of the decisions made by the Mayor and 7 other councillors in the name of 0%. Jeff gave us an excellent overview of the OADA act and how it's ultamatly more costly for municpalites who fail to contribute to reserve funds for when the act moves to it's compliance phase.

We talked about local website altlondon.ca reporting a lunch time meeting that "six (6) members of London city council met last Tues. Feb. 21, shortly before 12 noon at the Harmony Grand Buffet at 304 Talbot Street (at York) in London, immediately prior to a meeting of the Investment and Economic Prosperity Committee at 1 pm at city hall, a meeting of the Planning and Environment Committee at 1:15 pm and a key meeting of City Council at 3 pm, where the controversial 2012 budget was finalized later that evening."

It is being reported that 2 complaints have gone to the Ontario's Ombudsman about this meeting and whether any part of the Municipal Act was broken.

Jeff has even created a drawing with the god of bacon lovers called a snacon (we need to get stickers made.)</itunes:summary>
